The AI platform now automatically improves the quality of dental X-rays — by understanding the difference between visual noise and oral disease.
PALO ALTO, CA, September 25, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Overjet, the world-leader in dental AI, today announced a groundbreaking FDA clearance for AI-powered image enhancement. This technology enables Overjet to automatically improve the quality of blurry or noisy X-rays, without losing important clinical details, so that dentists can diagnose oral diseases with greater confidence.
Overjet is now the first and only dental AI platform that is FDA-cleared to enhance images. To obtain the clearance, Overjet asked dentists to rate the clarity of real X-rays, before and after AI enhancement. The dentists noticed a significant improvement: They rated the “after” images as approximately 25% higher quality, as a result of a process that takes only seconds.
“Our goal is to give dentists the best possible information, which empowers them to make faster and clearer recommendations to their patients,” said Wardah Inam, CEO of Overjet. “But in the past, dealing with low-quality images was a fundamental challenge — both for dentists and for our AI. That’s why we’re all excited about this clearance: it means that dentists can show patients a precise picture of their oral health, every time.”
Overjet’s image enhancement is available to the thousands of dental clinics that use its Clinical Intelligence Platform, at no additional cost. Already, these customers have witnessed its dramatic impact firsthand:
“It’s remarkable to see AI turn a blurry X-ray into a crystal clear image,” said Dr. Alap Choksey, Chief Professional Officer at North American Dental Group, an Overjet customer. “Image quality is such an important factor in providing the right care, and the difference with Overjet is night and day. This is something that I recommend to every dental practice.”
Crucially, the image enhancement technology is predicated on Overjet’s unparalleled understanding of dental pathologies. The FDA has awarded Overjet several landmark clearances over the last few years, including its ability to measure bone levels, detect caries (cavities), identify calculus (hardened plaque), and more. This deep grasp of dentistry now enables the AI platform to distinguish between meaningless visual noise and meaningful signs of disease.
“Under the hood, our image enhancement technology is unique because we specifically trained it to understand dental X-rays,” said Dr. Christopher Balaban, Vice President of Clinical Affairs at Overjet. “There are plenty of general-purpose image enhancement tools out there, which are useful for making your family photos look good on social media. However, the stakes are higher for a medical application like ours, since we have to make sure that we don’t lose important indicators of disease. Millions of images later, that’s what our AI makes possible.”
