Short Description
A custom-made or over-the-counter device worn at night to protect teeth from grinding (bruxism) and reduce jaw pain or TMJ issues.
Long Description
A nightguard is a dental appliance worn during sleep to prevent damage from bruxism (teeth grinding) and clenching. It serves as a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, reducing pressure on the jaw and preventing enamel wear, fractures, and jaw discomfort.
Nightguards are available in three main types: soft (for mild grinding), hard (for severe grinding or TMJ disorders), and dual-laminate (a combination of soft and hard materials). Custom-fitted nightguards, made by a dentist, provide superior comfort and protection compared to over-the-counter versions.
Regular use of a nightguard helps alleviate symptoms of bruxism, such as jaw pain, headaches, and worn-down teeth. Cleaning the nightguard daily and storing it properly prolongs its lifespan. For severe cases, additional treatments like stress management, orthodontics, or muscle relaxants may be recommended.
