Short Description
A condition involving involuntary teeth grinding or clenching, often occurring during sleep, leading to tooth wear and jaw pain.
Long Description
Bruxism is the habitual grinding or clenching of teeth, often occurring unconsciously during sleep or stressful situations. It can lead to excessive tooth wear, jaw pain, headaches, and even damage to dental restorations. Sleep bruxism is more common and may be linked to stress, anxiety, misaligned teeth, or sleep disorders like sleep apnea.
The condition can cause symptoms such as jaw soreness, increased tooth sensitivity, ear pain, and even cracks or fractures in teeth. Over time, severe bruxism can contribute to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, affecting the ability to open and close the mouth comfortably.
Treatment for bruxism includes wearing a custom nightguard to prevent enamel wear, stress management techniques, and, in some cases, orthodontic treatment to correct bite misalignment. Dentists may also recommend lifestyle changes, such as avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bed, to reduce the likelihood of teeth grinding.
