Short Description

A condition known as dry mouth, caused by reduced saliva flow, leading to discomfort, difficulty swallowing, and increased risk of cavities.

Long Description

Xerostomia, or dry mouth, is a condition in which the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva, resulting in a dry, sticky feeling in the mouth. It can be caused by medications, dehydration, aging, medical conditions (such as Sjögren’s syndrome or diabetes), or radiation therapy to the head and neck.

Saliva is essential for maintaining oral health, as it helps neutralize acids, wash away food particles, and prevent cavities. A lack of saliva can lead to bad breath, difficulty chewing and swallowing, increased plaque buildup, and a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Treatment for xerostomia depends on the cause and may include increasing water intake, using saliva substitutes, sucking on sugar-free candies to stimulate saliva flow, and avoiding caffeine or alcohol. Dentists may also recommend prescription treatments to help manage severe dry mouth.
