Short Description

A harmless, bony growth that develops in the mouth, commonly found on the roof of the mouth or the lower jaw near the tongue.

Long Description

A torus (plural: tori) is a noncancerous, bony growth that develops in the mouth, typically along the palate (torus palatinus) or the inner surface of the lower jaw (torus mandibularis). These growths are composed of dense bone and are generally painless, unless they become irritated or interfere with dental appliances.

The exact cause of tori is unknown, but genetic factors, teeth grinding, and excessive stress on the jawbone may contribute to their formation. They vary in size and shape, and some individuals may develop multiple tori.

Most tori do not require treatment unless they cause discomfort, interfere with dentures, or create oral hygiene challenges. If necessary, surgical removal can be performed to improve comfort and functionality.
