Short Description
Salivary glands located beneath the lower jaw that produce saliva to aid in digestion and oral health.
Long Description
The submandibular glands are a pair of major salivary glands located beneath the lower jaw (mandible). They are responsible for producing saliva, which helps in digestion, lubricates the mouth, and supports oral hygiene.
These glands produce a mixture of serous (watery) and mucous (thicker) saliva and contribute to the majority of resting saliva in the mouth. They release saliva through ducts that open under the tongue near the front teeth.
Dentists may evaluate these glands if a patient presents with symptoms such as dry mouth, swelling, or pain. Blockages, infections, or salivary stones can affect the function of these glands and may require treatment.
