Short Description
A dental device that keeps space open for a permanent tooth when a baby tooth is lost early, preventing misalignment.
Long Description
A space maintainer is a small dental appliance used to hold space for a permanent tooth when a primary (baby) tooth is lost prematurely. It helps prevent surrounding teeth from shifting into the open space, ensuring proper alignment when the adult tooth erupts.
There are two main types of space maintainers: fixed (cemented onto adjacent teeth) and removable (similar to retainers). Fixed maintainers are commonly used for children who may not reliably wear a removable device.
Using a space maintainer can prevent crowding, bite issues, and the need for future orthodontic treatment. Once the permanent tooth begins to erupt, the space maintainer is removed. Regular dental check-ups ensure proper monitoring of tooth development.
