Short Description
A metal or fiber rod placed inside a root canal-treated tooth to support a dental crown and strengthen the remaining tooth structure.
Long Description
A post is a small, cylindrical rod inserted into a tooth’s root canal after a root canal treatment to provide additional support for a dental crown. It is used when a tooth has lost a significant amount of its natural structure and needs reinforcement to hold the final restoration.
Posts can be made of metal (such as stainless steel or titanium) or fiber-reinforced materials. They are placed inside the cleaned root canal and secured with dental cement, helping to distribute biting forces evenly and preventing the tooth from fracturing.
While posts enhance the strength of a weakened tooth, they do not replace the need for a crown. Proper post placement ensures long-term durability, but excessive stress on a post-retained tooth can lead to fractures or loosening. Regular check-ups help monitor the condition of the post and surrounding structures.
