Short Description

A flap of gum tissue over a partially erupted tooth, often seen with wisdom teeth and prone to infection.

Long Description

An operculum is a flap of soft gum tissue that covers part of a partially erupted tooth, most commonly a wisdom tooth. It can trap bacteria, food, and plaque beneath it, leading to inflammation or infection known as pericoronitis.

This tissue may cause discomfort, swelling, or difficulty cleaning the area. In some cases, the operculum resolves on its own as the tooth erupts fully. In other cases, it may require treatment such as cleaning, antibiotics, or operculectomy (surgical removal).

Dentists often monitor opercula during regular checkups, especially in teens and young adults, to prevent complications and determine whether extraction or other interventions are necessary.
