Short Description
The surgical removal of gum tissue covering a partially erupted tooth, often a wisdom tooth.
Long Description
An operculectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes the flap of gum tissue (operculum) over a partially erupted tooth. It’s most commonly done for impacted wisdom teeth when the gum flap becomes inflamed or infected.
The tissue can trap food and bacteria, leading to pericoronitis—a painful and recurring condition. Removing the flap improves hygiene, relieves discomfort, and prevents further infection.
The procedure is typically quick and done under local anesthesia. Healing is usually fast with proper care, and operculectomy may prevent the need for full tooth extraction if the eruption process completes naturally.
