Short Description
Refers to the chewing surface of back teeth where upper and lower teeth come into contact.
Long Description
The occlusal surface is the top, flat surface of the molars and premolars that is used for biting and chewing food. It is where the upper and lower teeth meet and make contact during biting.
These surfaces often contain pits and grooves, making them susceptible to plaque accumulation and tooth decay. For this reason, many children and adults benefit from sealants on occlusal surfaces to prevent cavities.
The term “occlusal” also relates to occlusion, or how the teeth come together when the jaws close. Dentists evaluate occlusal relationships to identify issues such as malocclusion, bruxism, or jaw misalignment.
