Lingual Surface

L

Short Description

The tooth surface facing the tongue, important for speech, hygiene, and orthodontic treatment.

Long Description

The lingual surface is the inner-facing side of a tooth—the part that directly contacts or faces the tongue. This surface is present on all lower and upper teeth, though in the upper jaw it’s sometimes referred to as palatal.

These surfaces are essential in speech formation, tongue positioning, and oral hygiene. Plaque and tartar can accumulate here, especially behind the lower front teeth, making thorough cleaning important.

In orthodontics, braces or retainers may be bonded to the lingual surface for discreet treatment. This area is also where fluoride treatments and sealants may be applied to prevent decay.
