Interproximal

I

Short Description

The space between adjacent teeth where plaque and food particles can accumulate, requiring flossing or interdental cleaning for maintenance.

Long Description

Interproximal refers to the area between two adjacent teeth. These spaces are highly susceptible to plaque buildup, which can lead to cavities (interproximal caries) and gum disease if not properly cleaned. Because toothbrush bristles cannot reach these areas effectively, flossing or using interdental brushes is essential for oral health.

Dentists examine interproximal areas during check-ups using bitewing X-rays, which help detect cavities that may not be visible otherwise. Interproximal decay is common because these tight spaces allow bacteria to thrive when food particles are not removed.

Maintaining interproximal hygiene involves daily flossing, water flossers, or interdental brushes, along with regular dental cleanings. Proper care of these spaces helps prevent gum disease, bad breath, and cavities from forming between teeth.
