Short Description
A surgical procedure that removes excess or diseased gum tissue to treat gum disease or improve the appearance of the gumline.
Long Description
Gingivectomy is a periodontal surgical procedure in which excess or diseased gum tissue is removed to improve oral health and aesthetics. It is often performed to treat advanced gum disease, eliminate deep periodontal pockets, or reshape the gumline for cosmetic reasons.
The procedure involves numbing the area with local anesthesia, then carefully trimming and reshaping the gum tissue using a scalpel or laser. Gingivectomy helps reduce bacterial buildup in deep pockets, making it easier to maintain proper oral hygiene and prevent further gum deterioration.
Recovery from a gingivectomy typically takes a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery. Patients are advised to follow a soft diet, maintain gentle oral hygiene, and use prescribed mouth rinses to aid healing. In some cases, gum grafting may be required later to restore tissue lost due to periodontal disease.
