Short Description

An open space between teeth, often between the upper front teeth, which may be genetic or result from tooth loss.

Long Description

A gap, or diastema, is a space between two teeth, most commonly seen between the upper front teeth. Gaps can be caused by genetics, thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or missing teeth.

While many gaps are harmless and purely cosmetic, others can affect bite alignment or cause food to become trapped, leading to hygiene issues. In children, gaps may close naturally as permanent teeth erupt.

Treatment options include braces, clear aligners, bonding, veneers, or dental implants, depending on the cause and the patient’s preferences. Some people choose to keep their gap as a unique characteristic of their smile.
