Short Description
A hard, mineralized tissue covering tooth roots, helping anchor teeth to the jawbone by attaching to periodontal ligaments.
Long Description
Cementum is a specialized calcified tissue that covers the roots of teeth, providing a surface for the attachment of periodontal ligaments. It plays a crucial role in anchoring the tooth within the jawbone and supporting overall tooth stability. Unlike enamel, cementum is softer and more susceptible to damage if exposed due to gum recession.
Cementum does not regenerate like other tissues in the body, so protecting it is essential for maintaining long-term dental health. When gums recede due to periodontal disease or aggressive brushing, cementum can become exposed, leading to tooth sensitivity and an increased risk of decay.
Maintaining healthy gums through proper oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings helps protect cementum. If it becomes damaged or lost, treatments like gum grafting or desensitizing agents may be used to manage discomfort and protect the root surface.
